Year 4/5 Students Gallery and Gannets excursion

September 11th, 2025

We have also looked at their biology, breeding and flight habits and many other interesting and endearing facts about these interesting creatures.

To enhance our understanding of this topic and gain a local perspective, students were treated to a visit on Thursday 11th September to The Bay of Whales. Where local owner and artist Brett Jarrett entertained students with his engaging accounts of what and who inspired him to paint nature portraits, and his in-depth knowledge of marine mammals anatomical features and many other interesting facts.

Students marvelled at his taxidermy specimens, especially his huge albatross. What a treat it was, and a HUGE THANK YOU to Brett for his time and the effort he put into presenting ‘his story’.

The Gannet Colony was also a great treat, with volunteer and guide Josh Pierce battling the strong winds, (which was perfect to see gannets in their natural habitat) and sharing his knowledge on these marvellous giant seabirds. It was wonderful to stand beneath them as they soared on the thermals, and to watch the males returning from the ocean, seaweed offering in their beak, to their nesting females, sitting on their single egg!

The students loved the day and are now creating their own paintings and 3D models of their chosen native birds. Stay tuned for their creations..
